RMO Handbook

RMO Handbook is an app and website that has transformed the current RMO clinical handbook content into a simple user experience. It provides first year medical officers with an easier way to navigate information and search for specific material.

The RMO clinical handbook is a digital PDF handbook that has over 500 pages of content for first-year resident medical officers. The content can be difficult to find and navigate making the PDF book a frustrating user experience. Resident medical officers needed a way to engage and learn the content that met their needs. The Auckland DHB also needed a solution to improve content management and frequency of updates.

The team worked to create a minimum viable product (MVP). A lean canvas was created which provided a high-level view of the problem, solution, and benefits for users. From here the prioritisation of features was established, which informed the architecture and design of the digital solution. A sprint delivery framework was then implemented which involved a 2-week development cycle, of iterations and testing.

99% of staff have a mobile device which they carry with them 24/7, the RMO handbook app is therefore accessible to the majority at any time they require the relevant information.

Our goal was to create a minimum viable product that was fit for purpose, this was done on an Android platform. We are currently working to release an iOS version before we release the app to RMOs. Parallel to the development of the app we are exploring other features that might be of value to the user, and creating a product roadmap to inform future development.

A simple user experience

Users can simply and quickly search what they are looking for or browse the content in an easy to use, consolidated format.

Visually coded

Each chapter has been colour coded to create a visual guide. Breadcrumb navigation reassures users of their location at any moment in time, minimizing frustration and confusion.

Live updates

ADHB now has the ability to update content more frequently and distribute this content to all users in real time.
